I will pass this along to QA, but I have to say that it could be related to personal settings. It happens so sporadically, and to people with different resses, so it may be difficult to discern why it's happening to some, sometimes, and not to more on a regular basis.

It usually happens to me when I am in a busy city, like LA or KC, and turn local and trade off. It's as though the lines that would have been taken up by local and trade are "ghosted" in that they take up room, but I don't see the text. Usually changing towns fixes it.

Im 99% sure that it isnt a personal setting. It happens most in busy areas. Just stand around talking and after a while, your base will start to creep up, narrowing the window more and more. Very annoying, but not game breaking. also, it is very common, but not enough people spend enough time on 1 charachter or in a busy enough area

now im off to try to repro. ill get back to you on this.

Yes, I've had this (bug?) along time ago, but it's been awhile since it's happend now. (on a side note) there is a bug with the Friends list, If you are typing in the friends list (adding a person to it) and someone logs in or out, it will take the focus off of the friends list and delete your text, Also, this goes for when u get disconnected from the flist (whats up with this anyways......?) if u try to ''log back in'' and someone on ur list logs in/out, then it will take focus away from ur flist and delete ur text, this is **!EXTREAMLY!** annoying, i really hope that anet will fix this issue, because sometimes i have to give up logging back into my flist since people log in and out constantly -.-''. this has been going on for... months.

always happens in ToA dis1 or Droks dis1.. cant remember how i sorted it..i think i do `, scroll up then ` again

opens chat box, scroll up, close chat box, then it ussualy goes, not 100% not in game atmo, and last time i had it was about 4days ago

yes i get this alot! very frustrating, im alwats getting logged outta f-list, when i log bk in, i type my pw, ans enter, but f-list closes down..bloody annoying!

This only happens to me in busy trade districts... I don't really notice it anywhere else.

I see it happen when I spend a few minutes in a busy district. It seems that an extra LF/CR is send to the client, but the client doesn't add it to the end of the line it goes to:

The line is exactly long enough to fit in the chat window.<LF><CR>
<LF><CR>

Instead of merely taking up an empty space in the chat (leaving an empty line in the log,) it adds it to the bottom of the chat window, where the extra line never gets overwritten nor does it scroll up. For the most part, it is there until you restart the client, although I have ONCE seen it reset itself when I zoned out of the district, farmed some trolls, then came back into the city.

Also, as others have noted, the "extra" lines are tied to a specific chat channel. If you got it from a line in trade, and you turn off your trade channel, it disappears until you turn trade back on. Since most of the spam shows up in local chat, this bug happens most often to the "local" channel.

Edit: <CR> = carriage return. <LF> = Line feed. The characters don't render in the client, but they're at the end of every line, and I think the ones from the chat server are being put on a new line by themselves. Since the client can't output a blank line to the chat window, it just hangs at the bottom of the chat window.
